NEW ME

I was in the backseat of Erica’s car when I woke up, my legs dangling out through the wound down window while a steady wind billowed tiny pieces of leaves and forest debris through the gap.

I’d dreamt that past night, I was sure of it.

“Erica!” I shouted as I say with more enthusiasm than I’d intended, “I had a-! Erica! What are you doing!?”

With the speed of a viper, I snatched the car’s cigarette lighter from Erica’s hand and came to hold the black plastic end so as not to burn my own hands with the red-hot metal. It didn’t seem much the time to take note of it, but my reaction time was even quicker than before I’d fallen unconscious, but that didn’t mean much to Erica’s already burnt hand.

“Why would you do something like that?” I snapped in a voice that sounded like mine with more emotion tied to it.

“I… I don’t know…” Erica said as she looked over her hand curiously, her body swaying slightly as if she could feel the light morning breeze outside, “It hurt, but it didn’t hurt. You know?”

I tilted my head in confusion and then started shaking it, “No, no I really don’t. What made you think that that was a good idea?”

There it was again, heavy, emotional tones that seemed to be genuinely concerned. My head felt strange.

Erica shrugged, her hypnotized swaying ceasing as she did, “Dunno. I just thought I might give it a try. Have a look.” she said, shoving her hand in my face.

I was stunned to say the least, but once I got over the initial shock I saw that the red, raw, blistering wound had all but healed over.

“I cut myself when I was getting you in the car,” she said as she pulled her hand away, “I thought I was gonna need a hospital, but when I went to drive I noticed the bleeding had stopped. You ever seen anything like that?”

I thought on it for a moment, my memory taking the metaphorical backseat to the emotions and human nuances that I was quickly starting to understand.

“Most of the souls I’d taken on Earth had had their bodies immediately sent to Hell.” I said as more than my fair share of humanity got uploaded into my still burning brain.

I realize that I am bringing up how ‘human’ I was becoming a lot, but you have to understand that it was all so strange to me. Sure I’d started becoming more human since becoming trapped on Earth, though now suddenly the training wheels had come off and it looked like I was getting a crash course.

“Back before I’d returned to Heaven I’d consume a soul, as in taken it into my being and not merely had it as a part of me.” I said at the speed of jackrabbit.

“You mean like a… Heh, I actually can’t think of a good exam-”

“A bus!” I shouted, the fact that I’d come up with a metaphor before Erica
